Death of former Iranian President

Former Iranian President Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani has died from a heart attack aged 82. Rafsanjani was a dominant figure on the Iranian political scene mostly in the 80s and 90s.

Rafsanjani served as President from 1989 to 1997 and although he was part of the religious establishment he was known to be a pragmatic conservative who always sought better relations with the West.

Rafsanjani’s last career role was as Head of the Expediency Council which tries to solve conflicts between Parliament and the Guardian Council.
