A ten year old Maltese girl has died in a traffic accident which occurred in Triq il-Prajjiet, between Manikata and Popeye’s Village.
The fatal accident occurred earlier this afternoon at around half past five. Preliminary information indicates that there were three people inside the vehicle – a man and his two daughters, 10 and 8. The incident occurred when the man lost control of the Toyota Aygo he was driving in the direction of Popeye Village. The car hit a low fence at the side of the road and overturned. The girl was ejected from the vehicle as a result of the crash.
The Toyota and its passengers were dragged for several minutes before hitting a car that was driven by a 35 year old woman, finishing up on the road, badly damaged.
TVM is informed that at the time, a car driven by a tourist was driving up the wrong way from the direction of Popeye’s village. The vehicle occupied by tourists began reversing slowly when the other vehicle was hit by the man’s car after the driver made a sign indicating that it was heading in the wrong direction. Police are investigating the presence of security cameras in the area to try to trace the car driven by tourists.
The first to be taken to the hospital was the 10-year girl who sadly lost her life minutes after. The father and his younger daughter were taken to hospital in another ambulance and don’t appear to have suffered serious injuries.
A medical team from Mater Dei, members of the Department of Civil Protection and Qawra district police went on site to provide assistance. An inquiry is being led by Magistrate Simone Grech who has appointed various experts including Forensic expert Dr. Mario Scerri and technical expert Mario Buttigieg.
