1,100 African immigrants try to cross from Morocco into Spain

Around 1,100 African immigrants have tried to cross the Moroccan border into Spain. The immigrants tried to enter through the capital of Ceuta which, apart from Melilla, is the only land route between Africa and Europe.

In this attempt, around 50 Moroccan guards and five Spanish guards were injured, with one of them reported to have lost an eye. Only two of the 1,100 immigrants managed to cross, however they still ended up being injured after they jumped over a six metre barrier, and had to be admitted to hospital.

In December, around 400 immigrants managed to cross the the border into Ceuta. Hundreds of illegal immigrants who live in Morocco try to cross the border every year to enter into the cities of Ceuta and Melilla.
