147,000 patients use Pharmacy of Your Choice scheme

Deputy Prime Minister and Health Minister Chris Fearne said that at the moment there are 147,000 patients who are using the Pharmacy of Your Choice (POYC) scheme, with the aim of the Government being that every prescription is entered into a computerised system for better efficiency and less waste.

Minister Fearne said that in one year, the POYC scheme received 1.5 million prescriptions from patients, half of which are on a computerised system which is accessible to every doctor, both at the Health Department as well as to those who have a private practice, and to private clinics and hospitals.

He said that there are now 284 private doctors who are using this system, by means of which a pharmacy will have access to the prescription which will mean better efficiency and less confusion.

The Chief Executive of the POYC scheme, Mrs Celia Falzon said that the Government expenditure for this scheme is €40 million per year.
