Over 200 immigrants, who were rescued by NGO Open Arms, were transferred from a charity-operated vessel to a boat where they were placed in mandatory quarantine.
The 253 immigrants, including women and children, were transferred on a boat off the Sicilian port of Trapani. They were rescued by Open Arms after their dinghy sank off the Libyan coast on Wednesday.
At least six persons died in the tragedy, including a six-month old baby.
2020 saw the arrival on Italian shores of over 30,000 illegal immigrants from Tunisia and Libya – an increase in the number of immigrants following years of decreases in illegal migration due to intensive operations against the illegal trafficking of immigrants.
