This morning a special operation is underway at some horse stables in Marsa where tens of immigrants were found to be living illegally in properties and buildings whose use is not intended for residential purposes. In some of the stables, the Police had to cut through padlocks and iron bars to enter the properties.
TVM is informed that around 80 people were rounded up for questioning, although it has yet to be confirmed whether the number of immigrants living there might be even bigger.
The operation was ordered by Planning Authority officials who were assisted by Police from the Rapid Intervention Unit, the ALE and Immigration, as well as Health authorities.
The PA had already sent an enforcement notice to the owners because there had been a change of use in the property. TVM is informed that none of the owners had ever approached the authorities to regulate their position.
The immigrants were all taken to the Police HQ to be interrogated by the immigration Police.
