A blend of football and reading for children

Former international goalkeeper Saviour Darmanin said that the programme Bil-Qari u l-Kitba Niskorja! (Scoring through Reading and Writing) is aimed as assisting children who dislike reading and writing to appreciate these skills through their favourite sport – football.

In order to complement the theme, children are accompanied by sports and reading expert officers. They meet in a dressing rooms which has a library of Maltese and English books associated with football.

Children enjoy a mix of reading and playing football, are given a football shirt of their favourite team while the National Agency of Literacy provides reading and football material to encourage reading among children even at home.

TVM spoke with some of the children who expressed their enthusiasm to participate in such events which assist them to read more and express themselves better with writing.

Education Minister Owen Bonnici praised the work by the National Agency of Literacy in assisting to reduce literacy among children who, however, are successful in non-academic subjects such as sport.
