“A day before the accident Graziella came in to do some shopping” – Antoine Bugeja

Zabbar is a village in mourning following the death of two women who lost their lives in a traffic accident on Sunday evening, which also claimed seven other casualties over four generations within the same Zabbar family. The victims are a mother aged 53 and her daughter, 31. Two other relatives – a 77 year old woman and a 12 year old boy – are still in a critical condition. The accident – which occurred at the beginning of the road in Mosta which leads to Mgarr – is still being investigated by the police and a magisterial inquiry has also been launched.

Holy Week began with great sadness for this Zabbar family whose Sunday outing ended in tragedy after a mother and her daughter died on the spot as a result of a head-on collision with another vehicle.

Graziella Mallia, 53, was driving a small Maruti and was accompanied by five other passengers. At about eight thirty, the Maruti was involved in a frontal collision with an Audi carrying four passengers, at the bend that leads to the Buqana roundabout in Mosta. Since one car was being driven in the wrong lane, the Police are still trying to establish the dynamics of the accident.

There were four generations of the Mallia family in the Maruti: Lucy Mallia 77, who is hospitalized and in a critical condition; Graziella, her daughter, who was driving and who died on the spot; her daughter Fallon, a back-seat passenger who died from blows and her 12 year old son Eli Mallia, like his great grandmother is also hospitalised and in a critical condition. There were two other passengers in the Maruti – a 44 year old from Gzira who was slightly injured and a 29 year old from Sliema who did not sustain any injuries. The Maruti, which was extensively damaged, finished up on the central strip, and one of the victims was recovered from the car wreck after members of the Civil Protection eliminated part of the vehicle. .

As a result of the collision, the Audi which was being driven by a 31 year-old man from Mosta ended up on the stretch of road where excavation works are being carried out for road widening. In addition to the driver, there were three other passengers – a one year old and an eleven-year-old who both suffered serious injuries, and a ten year old who suffered slight injuries.

We found the community of Zabbar in a state of mourning and deeply anguished, particularly neighbours of the Mallia family.

Francine said “I think it was a huge misfortune for four members of this family to be struck by tragedy”.

Toni said “I am in a state of shock. It is a cruel tragedy for both.”.

Another woman said ” By coincidence, I saw her yesterday at Mass in the first pew of the Capuchin Church of Kalkara as her grandson is an altar boy there”.

Antoine Bugeja said “only last Saturday Graziella came to do some shopping here, joking about how she always liked to come in late. This is a tragedy which has affected many people in the area.”

The neighbors told us that early Monday morning the school van turned up as usual to pick up 12 year old Eli who is in hospital and probably still not aware that in a split second he lost both his mother and his grandmother, who were active in several local organizations including the band where Graziella spent some time playing the clarinet with the Philharmonic Society Maria Mater Gratiae.
