A storm in a sand bottle? Couple face up to 6 years in prison after taking sand from Sardinia beach
A French couple are in deep trouble after having done something they didn’t realise was wrong while on holiday in Italy.
The couple wanted a souvenir of a particular bay in Sardinia and filled up some bottles with sand.
The Italian island’s white sand is protected by law and the tourists are expected to be fined about €3,000 and face the possibility of a six year prison sentence. .
The couple presisted in saying that they didn’t know they were breaking the law when they were caught carrying the sand during a police raid. .
The couple – a man and a woman – are about 40 years old and had fourteen plastic bottles full of sand – a total of about 40kg of sand.
This is not the first case of its kind.
