Acquitted of murdering her daughter

A 21 year old woman from Salvador, whose baby was found dead in a toilet where the woman gave brith, has been acquitted of murdering her daughter.

Evelyn Hernández always protested her innocence, insisting that she did not know that she was pregnant and expecting a baby and that she had lost consciousness during the birth. The prosecution requested a forty year prison sentence.

The case was followed closely in El Salvador and overseas, with women’s rights activists
clamouring for her release.

El Salvador has one of the strictest laws against abortion which is illegal under every circumstance and anyone found guilty can face anything from two to eight years in prison. However, in many cases, the charges are changed to murder, as happened in this case.
