AFM an example to other countries through their migrant rescue operations – President Vella
President George Vella has expressed satisfaction for the work being carried out by the Armed Forces in rescue operations which save lives, and thanked the AFM for the sacrifices they make to place the national interest at the forefront.
During a visit to the AFM, President Vella declared that the army is an example to other countries in terms of the high number of rescues and humanitarian assistance in Maltese waters, when immigrants end up on boats on the high seas in the Mediterranean.
Referring to the recent murder of an immigrant, in which two soldiers are allegedly involved, President Vella stated that the army is not just one person, and the mistakes of one or two members, however big they might be, are not a reflection on the whole army.
President Vella concluded his address by thanking the AFM’s families for their continuous support to the officers, as together with the servicemen, they also go through tensions when their relatives are on a mission. The President said the relatives would be anxiously awaiting their return home.
The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Brigadier Jeffrey Curmi, stated that the visit by President Vella gives a clear picture of the AFM’s role, which calls for commitment and dedication.
At the end of the visit, the President presented Commissioning Certificates to a number of Armed Forces officers who have just been commissioned by President Vella as officers within the AFM.
