The number new Covid-19 infections have increased at a rapid rate in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, who between them make up more than 20% of the world population.
The increase in infections occurred after the three countries relaxed their restrictions which were put in place to stop the spread of the pandemic.
Pakistan has 86,139 active cases, Bangladesh has more than 57,500 and India over the last 24 hours registered 9,000 new cases and has 216,919 active cases.
The death rate has remained relatively low. In India, slightly more than 6,000 have died, in Pakistan almost 1,800 and in Bangladesh almost 800.
Experts however are afraid that because of the large number of unreported cases and the health systems in the respective countries, they will not be in a position to cope with a heavy increase in infections.
The situation in China
On the other hand, Chinese health authorities have reported no new cases of the Coronavirus through local transmission although it has reported five new imported cases including four in Shanghai and another one in the province of Sichuan.
The number of Covid-19 cases in China now stands at 83,027.
