All families to receive €35 cheque in the coming days

Every household in Malta and Gozo with one person or more will be receiving cost of living compensation in the coming days. This compensation will complement the cost of living increase given to all workers in January.

Finance Minister Edward Scicluna stated that a person living on his/her own will receive 15 euro, and if there are more than one persons in the household, the amount will be 35 euro. This is being given as compensation for the increase in the prices of various products, including bread and milk, an increase which had not been catered for when the COLA had been worked out in September.

Minister Scicluna stated that the money could not be sent directly to bank accounts as the sum is being given to each household dependent on the number of persons.

Professor Scicluna added that this measure will cost the country 5.3 million euro. The Minister pointed out that the payment will start being mailed in the coming days, and anyone who has not received the payment by the 17th of the month is to contact the Finance Ministry to arrange to get what is due to them. Minister Scicluna stated that the number of one-time-only Budget measures amounts to some 80 million euro per year.
