Appeals for calm after clashes between Israeli Police and Palestinian fighters

Israeli Police and Palestinian fighters clashed close to the old part of Jerusalem in tensions coinciding with Ramadan celebrations. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has appealed for calm.

Hundreds of Police officers have been stationed in the old city where fighting erupted during the night hours.

Palestinians threw stones and bottles in the direction of the police, who then intervened to disperse the crowds.

Jerusalem remains at the centre of the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians, with Israel declaring the city including the eastern part as its territory, whilst Palestinians want this area to become the future capital of the Palestinian state.
