Parliament has approved from all its stages a Legal Amendment regarding Public Health that strengthens the powers of the Superintendant for Public Health, Professor Charmaine Gauci in her work to issue directives to safeguard public health.
During Parliamentary discussions the Deputy PM and Minister for Health, Dr Chris Fearne, explained that the call for the construction of a hospital providing 60 beds to be provided with intensive care and 30 others relying on high dependence, will all be provided with ventilators.
He said the need has arisen because specialised doctors and nurses involved in the sector proposed the need for urgent operations. He said the decision was taken by a technical committee purposely established and to which the Opposition Spokesperson for Health had been invited.
Minister Fearne also said that St Thomas Hospital has also offered its services in the fight against the spread of COVID-19 while other discussion are taking place with other private hospitals to provide similar services. Dr Fearne also said that Steward’s Health Care Hospital in Gozo is making preparations for needed intensive treatment cases.
He said both sides of the House had agreed on clarifications requested by the Opposition.
