WATCH: The moment when Darren Debono was arrested in Lampedusa

The Italian media is continuing to prominently report the arrest of 43-year-old Darren Debono who was apprehended in a Lampedusa hotel after being sought by Italian Police in connection with contraband fuel consignments from Libya.
Debono, a former Malta international footballer, is among several persons suspected of being part of a contraband fuel circle. He has been described as being “the key” to the whole operation and is suspected together with Sicilian Nicola Orazio Romeo of organising transport from Libya. The Libyan contact has been named as Fahmi Ben Khalifa, head of an armed militia.
Meanwhile, tvm.com.mt is informed that the contraband operation has been going on for over the last two years and those suspected used various boats to offload fuel consignments from a Libyan ship.
Informed sources state that those involved used various boats, including a Chadron powerboat and a dinghy with a cabin bearing Debono’s nickname and his number when he was a football player (picture).
