Search in British library archives for missing parts of Maltese opera

The Norfolk Record Office (NRO) in Norwich, Norfolk, is asking libraries to look through their archives in the hope of finding the missing librettos of part of an opera that was written by the Maltese composer Paolino Vassallo.

Vassallo composed the opera in 1920 and it was performed in Malta in 1927 but three acts from the opera have been lost. The first two parts are at the NRO office in Norwich after being purchased in 1941.

The opera is about the nurse Edith Cavell from Norfolk who helped 200 men to escape being conscripted as soldiers during the First World War. She was arrested and charged with treason in 1915.

The request was made by a student who is studying Vassallo’s Maltese works.
