A woman who is expecting a baby and her husband were evacuated by the Ocean Viking ship which was sailing in the Mediterranean with a group of immigrants. The couple was brought to Malta by an Armed Forces of Malta helicopter. On Twitter, the French non-governmental organization SOS Mediterranee, which operates the ship, said the woman was in critical condition and was brought to Malta where she is receiving the necessary treatment.
The couple were among 420 immigrants aboard the Ocean Viking that picked up immigrants from Libya in recent days and is now on its way to the port of Augusta in Sicily which will welcome this group of immigrants. Eight of the immigrants tested positive for Covid following tests conducted by the crew.
Over the weekend, the Libyan Coast Guard stopped and seized a number of boats carrying 208 irregular immigrants of various nationalities, many of them Africans. In separate operations, Libyan authorities rescued about 800 immigrants over a two day period. The immigrants were taken back to Libya and members of the International Immigration Organization and the UNHCR gave first aid to the people who were rescued.
