UPDATED: Two arraigned on drug offences – one charged with trafficking, the other with purchasing
Two Somali nationals, a 46-year-old and a 33-year-old, have been arraigned in Court, Magistrate Natasha Galea Sciberras presiding, after they were arrested yesterday in Spinola Gardens, St Julian’s by St Julian’s Community Police officers.
The Somalis were arrested when, in the course of a foot patrol around St Julian’s, the officers noted the men were behaving suspiciously and one of them was seen to hand over a bag to the other.
The Police approached and stopped the men and carried out a search, which resulted in the recovery of sachets of drugs, suspected as being cocaine and cannabis, in the basket.
46-year-old Nasir Aydiid Aabi pleaded not guilty to trafficking the drugs in St Julian’s and was remanded in custody after Defence Counsel did not request bail.
33-year-old Ahmed Qadar Abuukar was arraigned on the same offence and was charged with having purchased the drugs from Aabi. He pleaded not guilty, and a request for bail was turned down.
According to Defence Counsel, up to some time ago Abuukar, who has been living in Malta for over 10 years, had been employed as a technician with a leading company in Malta but ended up in financial difficulties after the company reduced its staff complement.
