Belarus Opposition wins Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Conscience

The democratic opposition in Belarus has won the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Conscience.

The President of the European Parliament, David Sassoli, congratulated the representatives of the Belarusian opposition for their courage, resilience and determination in the face of a much stronger opponent. However, it said these representatives had truth on the side. David Sassoli urged them to stay strong, not to give up their fight and promised them the support of the European Parliament.

The democratic opposition in Belarus is an initiative of brave women and other prominent people from civil society. Belarus has been in a political crisis since the August 9 presidential election that led to a revolt against President Alexander Lukashenko and brutal repression by the regime.
