“Big family gatherings should be avoided this Christmas ” – Minister Fearne

Deputy Prime Minister and Health Minister Chris Fearne reaffirmed that the maximum number of people who can gather outside is 6, and stressed that what cannot be done outside should not be done inside in private homes.

Speaking via a phone-in during TVAM, the Deputy Prime Minister said that big family gatherings should be avoided this Christmas.

Mr Fearne said that now that winter was coming, the number of infections was increasing across Europe, and indications show that this trend would continue in the next three months. He said that Malta was prepared for this, but there could still be situations where some operations or services will have to be reduced.

He stressed that everyone should do their part to control the spread of the virus and this would help reduce the pressure on health services.

He went on to add that the best tools against the spread of the virus were the observance of social distance and the use of masks – which were the most effective when speaking, because that was when the virus was most likely to spread.

Regarding the vaccine, the Deputy Prime Minister said that Malta would received the virus on the same day that it arrived in Europe, alongside other major countries.
