This Friday, there will be worldwide commemoration of World Donation Blood Day. In Malta this year this will be marked by a wave of initiatives and cooperation to emphasise the need for blood donation, together with the recognition and commemoration of the day itself. In fact, this year, several buildings will be floodlit red, including the facade of the Health Ministry in Valletta, the facade of the Local Councils Association administrative building at Marsa, as well as the facade of the Ta’ Pinu Basilica, the facade of Lourdes Church and the Three Hills Fountain in Gozo.
A concert dedicated to Blood Donors will also be held in Gozo and will take place on Saturday at 8 pm at Villa Rundle in Rabat. Also commemorative to the day a ceremony will be held under the patronage of President George Vella during which in the name of the community, 17 persons – ten females and seven males – will receive recognition for their blood donations.
The ceremony will be held on Friday at 7 pm at Verdala Palace in Buskett. On the occasion there will be the launching of the song “Nagħtu d-demm, Nagħtu l-Ħajja” (‘We give blood, we give life’) to be sung by a choir of young children. There will also be related strong tributes by individuals who have benefited greatly from transfusions.
Those that want to celebrate the day may donate blood between 8 am and 6 pm at the Blood Donation Centre at G’Manġa. For further information one may ring 79307307 or 80074313. One may also access the page onFacebook or visit the site.
