Budget 2019: Increase in children’s allowance – Matsec exams free of charge

For the first time in 11 years, the children’s allowance for families with gross income of less than €20,000 a year will be increased, whereby the allowance will go up to a maximum of €96 a year for every child.

After the Government last year started paying for half of the MATSEC and SEC exams costs, it was announced that these exams will be completely free of charge from next year.

Furthermore, parents who send children in independent schools will again benefit from less reduction in tax on the schools’ fees. From next year, the reduction will increase to €1,600 for every child in the kindergarten, €1,900 for primary level and €2,600 for the secondary. This amounts to €300 for every child.
