A car which was parked in Triq Mile End, Hamrun, opposite the Labour Party Headquarters, caught fire at around 3am last night.
Residents in this street woke up startled to the sound of small explosions and when they looked outside they saw a silver-coloured Toyota Yaris enveloped by flames.
Member of the Civil Protection Department were called to put out the fire. Another car parked nearby also caught on fire, while there was also some damage to the facade of a block of apartments.
The Police investigations are being led by Inspector Robert Vella from the Hamrun police station, while Magistrate Joe Mifsud has opened a magisterial inquiry.
This case happened shortly after the Police and the Armed Forces were called to the same street because of suspicions that a bomb had been placed under an Alfa Romeo Julietta. Members of the Armed Forces’ Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit carried out a search which proved negative.
