President George Vella today celebrates his 77th birthday, and has chosen to do so in the company of basketball athletes with mixed abilities.
The Office of the European Parliament in Malta, the Malta Basketball Association, Malta Wheelchair Basketball, Aġenzija Żgħażagħ and the Paralympic Committee joined forces with the aim of increasing awareness about the European elections scheduled for 25 May.
During an activity entitled Did-Darba Se Nivvota ghall-Isport (This time I’m Voting for Sport), President George Vella stated that although the European Parliament and sport are distinct, there is a certain semblance. President Vella added that both enjoy a sense of competition, which is needed to prod individuals to move forward. The President urged youths to vote, saying this was a unique opportunity to make their voices heard.
Basbetball athletes from various aspects of life, athletes with mixed abilities, paralympic athletes, their coaches and basketball fanatics who competed against each other, all took part in Did-Darba Se Nivvota ghall-Isport.
This event is part of the This Time I’m Voting for Sport campaign spread throughout the EU and launched by the European Parliament to encourage participation in the European democracy. The campaign is being run by citizens, with more than a quarter of a million Europeans having registered to the EU’s future. Activists and volunteers around all of Europe are organising discussions, running marathons, visiting schools, and in one case which stands out, even walking from Lyon to the European Parliament in Brussels – all this to urge people to vote in the European elections.
