The Gozo Centre for the Family in the Community has been inaugurated at Marsalforn. The Centre will provide help and support to families and persons who require social assistance.
Professionals in the social sphere will be providing their services. The CEO for the Fondazzjoni għas-Servizzi ta’ Ħarsien Soċjali, Alfred Grixti, said this Centre will complement others that are already active in Gozo.
He said the services aim to provide help to those with family problems, the upbringing of children, problems of domestic violence and those contemplating suicide.
The Director of the FSWS branch in Gozo, Mons Joe Vella Gauci, said it is proper for the Fondazzjoni to sustain social services offered in Gozo.
He said operations will not only be conducted from the office in Xewkija but now there are other localities throughout Gozo and today’s new office at Marsalforn is regarded as a strategic one.
He emphasised that these social services should reach vulnerable persons in the community. Gozo Minister Justyne Caruana said it is important that Gozo faces up to the social realities that are changing.
She said she is convinced there will be many who will turn to this Centre for services that will bring about a change in their lives.
Minister Caruana said this is part of an outreach project being extended to persons and families that need various means of support.
The Minister for the Family and Social Solidarity, Michael Falzon, stated that social services have to continue to be strengthened to meet today’s realities.
He said that a third of the country’s expenditure passes through one Ministry in the social sphere but money is not enough. He said there has to be a commitment that leaves a positive mark on society and it is important to work together. He appealed to all professionals in the social sphere to work together because by working together, better results are produced.
He said this project is evidence that the Government has a social soul.
