Chile closer to legalize marriages between same-sex persons

Chile’s President, Michelle Bachelet, sent a bill to the country’s Congress for the legalisation of marriage between same-sex persons.

The bill is a closer step to the introduction of more civil rights in one of the most conservative countries in South America, and follows the 2015 legislation approval by the Chilean congress permitting civil unions for same-sex persons following years of debates.

Although it is not clear whether Congress will approve the bill presented by President Bachelet, whose term ends next March, various other Latin American countries are enacting laws in favour of more rights to LGBTI persons.
