Chinese couples can now have up to three children

In China, a couple can now have up to three children. To date, the law stated that a couple was only allowed two children.

According to the Chinese media, the new law was approved by President  Xi Jinping.

After a census was held, it was found that the population in China was growing too slowly. Therefore the pressure for couples to be allowed to have more children increased, so that the population would not continue to go down.

According to last year’s census, 12 million babies were born, a significant decrease form 2016 when six million more babies were born that year. With 12 million babies last year, China registered its lowest birth rate since 1960.
