Christopher Muscat appointed Maestro di Cappella at Metropolitan Cathedral
The Archdiocese of Malta has appointed Maestro Christopher Muscat as Maestro di Cappella at the Metropolitan Cathedral. The duties of Maestro di Cappella include the preparation and direction of music and choir for liturgical celebrations in St Paul’s Cathedral, Imdina and St John’s Co-Cathedral, Valletta, as well as promoting liturgical music in the Malta archdiocese.
Maestro Muscat, who is a composer and director, has been involved in sacred music since the age of ten, when he was a member of the Co-Cathedral choir. He graduated B.A. Hons. from the University of Malta, and obtained his Masters in music from Surrey University.
In 2004 Maestro Muscat started leading the Jubilate Deo choir which had been set up in Naxxar in 1974, and which will now become the resident choir at the Co-Cathedral and in the Archdiocese. Muscat conducted several concerts on special occasions at St John’s, the Imdina Cathedral, London’s Westminster Cathedral and St Peter’s Basilica at The Vatican. His works have been performed at important European venues as well as in Tunisia, China and the US.
Over the years Maestro Muscat has collaborated with a number of orchestras, choirs and artists of international fame, including the Medici String Quartet, the Virtuosi di Praga, composers Karl Jenkins and Marco Frisina, the National Youth Choir of Great Britain and the Coro Sinfonico di Milano Giuseppe Verdi.
Christopher Muscat is a member of the World Council of Choirs, and is regularly invited to judge international vocal and instrumental competitions and compositions. For a number of years he was also Artistic Director and President of the Malta International Choir Festival.
