In Ukraine, comedian Volodymyr Zelensky is set to be the next president of the country after the exit polls predict he has 70% of the votes cast. Today the people voted in the last round of the presidential elections. The choice was between current President and billionaire Petro Poroshenko and television comedian Volodymyr Zelensky who is new to the political scene.
In the first phase of elections where 39 candidates contested, Zelensky got more than 30% of the votes while Poroshenko got a little less than 16%.
Poroshenko who has run the country for almost 5 years said that it was not important who the president was but that the most important thing was the way forward which the country needed to heed. Zelensky said that the Ukranians had voted for victory and for the hope of freedom. Zelensky, 41 years old, stars in the long-running Ukranian TV series ‘Servant of the People” where he plays the role of a teacher who unexpectedly becomes the president of the country, In fact, he has even named his political party “Servant of the People.”
Poroshenko has often stressed the need for the country to have a president with experience at a time when Eastern Ukraine is at war with Russia but it seems that the people are fed up to the back teeth with corruption and of the rich are becoming richer.
In the Ukraine, the president enjoys power over the country’s national security, its defense and foreign policy. Ukraine has a population of almost 44 million.
