Compilation of evidence in Caruana Galizia murder case to begin on Monday

The compilation of evidence against the three people charged with the murder of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia will begin being heard on Monday 18 December.

The compilation will be heard in front of Magistrate Charmaine Galea after her name was drawn by lot last night. This was after Magistrate Donatella Frendo Dimech had to recuse herself from continuing to hear the case.

In Court room number 14, Magisrate Donatella Frendo Dimech yesterday declared that 34 years ago she was in the same class as   Daphne Caruana Galizia’s sister, and over the years they had continued to exchange birthday greetings.  She said that over the last few months, they had both lost family members and had also exchanged condolences. This was enough for the defence lawyers, after consulting with the accused, to declare that Dr Freendo Dimech should not continue to hear the case because the accused did not feel comfortable with her as the magistrate.

The legal proceedings against brothers Alfred and George Degiorgio and Vince Muscat, accused with the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia have hit the first snag after the first sitting with Magistrate Frendo Dimech recusing herself.  She took this decision following the request by the legal aid lawyers who were appointed by the Court to represent the three suspects.
