Composer and Musician Sammy Galea dies at the age of 86

The death of Maltese musician and composer Sammy Galea was announced today.

Galea, 86, toured the world through music making a name for himself as a composer with a long career in which he achieved every success at both local and even international level.

Chief among these was his composition of Singing This Song with which Renato represented Malta in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1975, with a good result, while almost 38 years ago his wife Doreen won the International Maltese Song Festival with the song ‘Jekk Trid’ (If You Wish), where she finished off in 6th place at a festival in Bratislava.

In 1994 he won the Malta Song Festival with the song “Forsi” and continued to win this festival organized by PBS for 4 consecutive years. His composition Taht l-Qawsalla (Under the Rainbow) was published and recorded in Zurich by UNICEF. He won the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003 at the Malta Music Awards and the Tribute to Floriana Award by the Floriana Local Council.
