Coronavirus spreads to a number of European countries

A number of European countries have reported their first cases of coronavirus and all of them appear to be linked to the outbreak of the virus in Italy.

Austria, Croatia and Switzerland said that the cases involve people who were in Italy. A similar situation was reported in Algeria.

Over the last few days, Italy was the European country which was the worst hit by this virus where 300 cases were reported along with 11 fatalities. However, neighbouring countries decided that closing the borders would be a disproportionate reaction.

During a meeting held in the last few hours, the Health Ministers from France, Germany, Italy and the European Commission committed themselves to keeping the borders open.

In the UK, schoolchildren who were returning back from their holidays in Northern Italy were sent back home, while the Government published guidelines for those who are travelling.
