The hobby that Neil Zammit practiced daily has caused him his life when he went spear diving off Baħar iċ-Ċagħaċ, accompanied by his friend. Hours of search, coordinated by the Armed Focres, ended with the sad news of the finding of Neil’s corpse at the sea bed.
Hours of tension for relatives and friends of 20-year old Neil Zammit from Paola ended in sorrow when in the afternoon, divers of the Armed Forces found his body on algae in the sea bed. The search for Neil started late on Monday evening when his friend, who was spear diving with him, reported immediately his missing when he did not emerge on the sea surface. The Armed Forces immediately started a search in the Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq and White Rocks area, which was indicated by his friend. Divers, patrol boats and a helicopter participated in the search.
The search, which was suspended at night, continued at dawn and for some time was suspended due to the sighting by a helicopter of a big blue fish in the area. Informed sources close to the rescue operation told TVM that the Armed Forces divers had to free dive without cylinders so that they cover a bigger area at sea, while they were bound to a dinghy as a precaution. It was close to four in the afternoon that Neil’s corpse was located at the sea bed, brought up by the Armed Forces and taken at their maritime base in Haywharf. The autopsy will be held on Wednesday morning to determine the cause of the youth’s death.
Neil Zammit was known for his skilled free diving as the four-minute video he recently uploaded on Facebook shows with beautiful scenes of the sea bed and well prepared for the passion he practiced.
Claude Sciberras from The Dive Warehouse, who during the past two years provided the equipment to Neil Zammit as a sponsor for his hobby, told TVM that Zammit used to go diving almost daily with great skills and passion. Mr Sciberras added that Neil was trained in the hobby by Ludovick Casha, who two years ago also died in similar circumstances at Dwjera, although he was considered as one of the best free divers.
