Covid-19 had been circulating in Brazil for two months before first case was registered
Researchers at the Federal University of Santa Catarina in Brazil have announced that in November they found the presence of the coronavirus in a sewage sample which was taken from Florianopolis, the capital of Santa Catarina in southern Brazil.
This means the virus was already circulating in Brazil two months before the first case was reported in the US and three months before the first cases of the virus were registered in Brazil towards the end of February.
According to a study carried out by 14 scholars, the virus was already in Brazil a month before the first case was confirmed in the world. Prof Gislaine Fongaro said that the sample was taken during a routine monthly inspection.
