The Department of Civil Protection has just launched ten new vehicles on the road, which will allow department officials to arrive on an accident site, even before the arrival of fire fighting vehicles. Minister of Interior and National Security Michael Farrugia said that the increase in the vehicle fleet was part of the strategy to strengthen the Civil Protection Rescue Services.
The ten vehicles which joined the Civil Protection fleet, will allow Department Officials to arrive before other emergency vehicles, enabling them to make the first assessment of the situation and plan for each eventuality, accordingly. Director of Civil Protection, Emmanuel Psaila said that the Department was in dire need of these vehicles.
“When you arrive on the scene as an officer, you can effect the set up as you like and need. It is very hard when you go on the workplace and find a strategy all over the place. Changing things around takes time. ”
Minister of Interior and National Security Michael Farrugia said the government should plan to further strengthen the Civil Protection with equipment human resources and training.
“We must change the structure of what we know traditionally to a much broader above. And this is more apparent in desktop exercises. There are 13 of these currently in progress which deal with different situations that one can come across in the country and ways in which various departments work together when finding themselves in distress. ”
Minister Farrugia said that the modernization part of the Civil Protection includes a new Control Room and new premises which are part of a plan for the next seven years.
