Damages in foundations of the old church of Birkirkara

The old church of Birkirkara dedicated to Saint Mary has structural damages in its foundations that have caused cracks in the church building. Parish priest Fr Reuben Deguara is working with a number of professionals to plan the intervention needed so that the damage will not aggravate itself.

Historian Sandro Sciberras said that this church contains various architecture elements and inside it is buried Dun Gaetano Mannarino who had led the uprising of priests against Grand Master Ximenes.

Architect Adrian Mifsud, who for years monitored the development of the damage, is looking into the structural damage of the church while Engineer Evan Dimech, together with the University of Malta, created an equipment that is measuring all the movements of the church.

In order to raise some funds needed to repair the Saint Mary Church, the Schola Cantorum Jubilate will perform during a concert in the church on the 19th of March.
