The death has been announced of Norman Gimbel, a writer of lyrics who won an Oscar and a Grammy. Gimbel died at the age of 91 at his home in California on 19 December.
Gimbel will best be remembered for the lyrics of Killing me Softly, recorded by Roberta Flack, Fugees and others. He had won a Grammy Award for this work in 1973, together with composer Charles Fox.
Other well-known works by Gimbel include lyrics for the signature tune to the TV series Happy Days and the lyrics in English for the Brazilian melody The Girl from Ipanema.
In 1984 Gimbel was inducted into the Hall of Fame for lyricists.
