Death of Jesuit Fr Arthur Vella

The death has been announced of the Jesuit Fr Arthur Vella at the age 88. Born in Zejtun, Fr Vella joined the Jesuits following a retreat at St Aloysius’ College.

Fr Vella was ordained in 1960, and served the Jesuit Order and the Church both in Malta and abroad. He was Provincial of the Jesuits in Malta, Rector of the Internationl College of Jesuits in Rome, and Director of the Secretariat for Ignatian Spirituality at the Jesuits’ Curia in Rome. He also spent some time on a posting in Chile.

In 1971 the Pope chose Fr Vella as a member of the Extraordinary Committee responsible for the reform of the aministration of Church property in Malta.

Fr Vella will be remembered mainly for his fatherly advice. Many persons have expressed their sorrow at his demise.

His funeral will be held at Mosta parish church on Thursday at 3.30 p.m.
