Death sentence carried out in US – first woman sentenced to die in 67 years
The US Government has carried out the death penalty on 52-year-old Lisa Montgomery, who had been found guilty of murder and is the only woman to be executed in 67 years. Montgomery was administered a lethal injection at the Terre Haute penitentiary in Indiana.
The case had been notorious as Montgomery’s lawyers had argued she was mentally ill and had suffered serious abuse in her childhood. In 2004 Montgomery had choked a pregnant woman before cutting open the woman’s womb and taking the unborn child. The victim, 23-year-old Bobby Jo Stinnett, had bled to death and died.
Before the execution was carried out, Montgomery was asked whether she had any last words. She replied she did not have anything to say. Montgomery was certified dead at 1.30 a.m. Her lawyer stated that all who participated in the execution should feel shame.
