UPDATED: Diver who died at Mġarr ix-Xini is a soldier with the Armed Forces
The diver who died at Mġarr ix-Xini this morning is a soldier with the Armed Forces of Malta.
35-year-old Christine Gauci, who lives in Rabat, Gozo, died this morning after she found herself in difficulties when diving with another person in the limits of Mġarr ix-Xini.
The Police stated that they were called out at about 10.30 this morning to provide assistance on-site, and on arrival at the scene they immediately requested back-up from the Armed Forces, who started a search for the woman.
The woman was found a few minutes later, in circumstances which indicated she was beyond help and a medical team certified her death when she was taken ashore at Imġarr harbour.
Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri later posted on Twitter that the woman was a member of the same Armed Forces, and she had been indulging in her diving pastime at the time of the incident.
There are numerous photographs on Christine Gauci’s Facebook page showing her diving or with motorcycles, which were her other passion.
Close friends described her as an adventurous woman, as well as energetic, altruistic, always smiling and with a heart of gold.
Christine also played with the Banda Ċittadina La Stella. The La Stella Philharmonic Society posted on Facebook that the Society is in mourning following the news of Christine’s tragic death.
Also in shock is a friend of Christine, Euro Parliamentarian Josianne Cutajar, who stated she has been left speechless at this tragic and terrible news.
