A European Report on drugs highlights that a drug seizure in Malta ranks among the top ten drug seizures made at European airports in 2020.
The case goes back to 13 September of last year. On that day two Spanish women had been apprehended with, among other items, 9.58 kg of cocaine in the course of an operation by Customs officers at the airport when the women arrived in Malta on a flight from Madrid. The drug had been concealed in the false bottom of a suitcase.
In 2020, 765 cases involving drugs had been reported at European airports. In total, over 6.9 tons of various illegal drugs had been seized. The largest hauls, 63%, remained cocaine.
