Earthquake disrupts Maltese couple’s holiday – they wait for alternative destination instead of Lombok
It was intended as a dream holiday for Rebecca and Nader Toutoungi with a trip to Bali and Indonesia, two destinations renowned for their picturesque scenery and beautiful beaches.
However, the Maltese couple’s holiday was disrupted when they were informed that Lombok island, which they planned to visit in the coming days, was hit by two strong earthquakes within a few days that left great destruction.
Speaking with TVM, Rebecca stated that while they were spending days enjoying the beauty of Bali (as the photos hereunder show), they were informed by the travel agency that they could not visit Lombok island.
The reason was that their hotel collapsed, and neither on Gili island as the situation was bad due to the tremors hitting the area. There is the possibility of further tremors in the coming days.
Last Sunday, Lombok was hit by a 7-strong Richter scale earthquake and since then more than 350 other aftershocks occurred in the area which may be also strong.
The couple are now expecting alternative arrangements to spend the rest of their holiday at another safer destination in Southeast Asia. Various other tourists who planned to visit Lombok faced a similar situation.
Lombok is an Indonesian island to the East of Bali. It is very popular with tourists due to its beautiful beaches. Residents of the island and visiting tourists were evacuated due to the prevailing danger following the earthquake.
Indonesia is a country which is frequently affected by earthquakes as it lies in what is known as the ‘Circle of Fire’ where continuous movements occur in the earth’s crust that cause many earthquakes and volcano eruptions in the Pacific Ocean periphery.
More than half of active volcanoes on earth form part of the volcanoes circle situated in these areas.
