Efforts underway to open first Children’s House in Malta

Family and Social Solidarity Minister Michael Farrugia said the Ministry is working for the opening in  Malta of the first Children’s House. The announcement was made by Minister Farrugia during a meeting with UNICEF Director Olav Kjorven at UNICEF General Headquarters in New York.

Minister Farrugia stated that in the children’s sector Malta was also working on preparations for draft legislation on Children’s Rights, for the country to conform with the Lanzarote Convention. Minister Farrugia also spoke about a number of measures taken in Malta over the past three years to safeguard children’s interests, and about legislation safeguarding children in State care. Minister Farrugia also referred to the opening of the first rehabilitation centre for under-18s, and on the opening of the first centre for children with acute behaviour.

Director Kjorven said that what Malta had achieved in a relatively short time was impressive, adding that as an organisation UNICEF was anxious to speak with Maltese Ministers, even in light of Malta presently holding the Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

Minister Farrugia and Director Kjorven spoke about projects and initiatives of usefulness for children which can be carried out in collaboration between UNICEF and IFFD of the United Nations and Malta. At the end of the meeting Minister Michael Farrugia and Director Olav Kjorven expressed satisfaction at having had the opportunity to meet and share ideas which are expected to bear fruit in the near future on behalf of vulnerable children.
