El Chapo’s wife arrested in the United States on drug trafficking charges

Emma Coronel Aispuro, 31, the wife of drug baron Joaquin Guzman, known as El Chapo, has been arrested for drug trafficking in the United States.

Aispuro, who has two sons along with Guzman, was arrested at Dulles International Airport, near Washington DC.

She is accused of conspiring to traffic cocaine, metamphetamine, heroin and cannabis, as well as plotting to facilitate her husband’s escape from a Mexico prison in 2015.

He had escaped from the maximum security prison in Altipano through a tunnel dug under the prison on a nearby property bought by his children for the purpose. It is alleged that she also tried to escape again before being extradited to the United States in 2017.

Guzman, now 63, ran the Sinaloa drug cartel, which is said to have been the largest drug supplier in the United States. He is serving a life sentence in New York.
