Tragedy struck a Żebbuġ family when a father fell two storeys into a building shaft and died. The incident happened as his own son looked on when they were working on a Ħamrun shopping complex.
Emanuel Grech, aged 65, died at Daniel’s Shopping Complex in Ħamrun as he was helping his son to carry things when he stumbled and fell into the shaft at the bottom of which is a parking complex.
The fatal incident took place just before 8 am. Restoration work is currently being carried out on part of the complex in preparation for the opening of another establishment.
The deceased man was helping by carrying things while his son was laying tiles and saw his father stumble and fall. An ambulance medical team arrived to assist but unfortunately the man died on the spot.
Magistrate Doreen Clarke ordered an Inquiry. Inspector Stacey Attard from the Ħamrun District Station is leading Police investigations. The Occupational Health and Safety Authority has launched a separate Inquiry.
