The European Parliament has adopted a report which was negotiated on behalf of the S&D Group by MEP Josianne Cutajar.
In a statement, Cutajar said this report will ensure more gender equality. The vote in plenary took place after the report on gender mainstreaming in cohesion policy was successfully passed by the Committee on Regional Development.
Cutajar said that this report sent a strong message that women could be allowed to fall behind in society and there was need for a link to ensure equality when member countries come to use European Union cohesion funds.
“We want to see this report lead to the promotion of more equality which will subsequently mean improving the quality of life of women across Europe,” said Josianne Cutajar.
Dr Cutajar explained the importance of cohesion funds in combating social scourges such as gender-based violence and also to address issues such as a better work-life balance.
The report also includes a strong reference to combating discrimination against the LGBTI community.
“This is a report that promotes equality, inclusion, social justice and respect,” Dr Cutajar said. “Our duty now is to continue to push so that from words and reports we move towards more equality with facts. My work in this field will continue”, concluded the Maltese MEP
