Etna volcano in Catania erupted earlier today while a 3 Richter strong tremor was measured in the area. Smoke emitted from the volcano was seen from various places, while authorities took the decision, at around 2.00 in the afternoon, to close Catania’s Fontanarossa airport, which is situated not far from the volcano.
Catania is one of the airports which has frequent flights to Malta. Two Ryanair flights were cancelled this afternoon, while MIA and national airline Air Malta are monitoring the situation.
An Air Malta flight from Southend in London, which was scheduled to stop in Catania, continued with its flight towards Malta, while more flights from and to Catania may be affected according to Sicilian airport operations.
