Updated: PM Robert Abela in Brussels for meeting of European Council

The increase in energy prices and the Covid-19 situation are among topics being discussed today during the meeting of the European Council in Brussels which is being attended by leaders of the 27 member states, among them Prime Minister Robert Abela.

Prior to the Council meeting, the Maltese Prime Minister also met with European Commissioners and other leaders of the Socialists and Progressives Group, including those of Spain and Portugal, with the aim of having a common stand on themes affecting them.

In a letter sent to European leaders before the meeting, European Council President Charles Michel said the increase in energy prices is hindering the recovery from the pandemic and badly affecting citizens and businesses.

Referring to the Covid-19 situation, Michel stated that the pandemic has not ended, and there are still member states experiencing an increase in the numbers of infections. In comments to journalists before the Council meeting, Michel reiterated that much progress had been registered through vaccination, but more remains to be done, particularly regarding scepticism about the vaccine and misinformation.

Meanwhile, before the Council meeting on this theme, the European Parliament approved a resolution for legislation linked to the process of research, purchase and distribution of the Covid-19 vaccine to be more transparent.

At today’s Council meeting the leaders are also discussing the rule of law, and during a working dinner later this evening a discussion will be held on trade and the preparations for the next summits.

This meeting of European leaders will see the final attendance by German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
