Father of seven admits to sending his children on a stealing spree

A 38-year-old father from Qormi was placed on probation for three years after admitting to sending four out of seven of his children to steal toys from a shop in San Ġwann last Sunday.

The name of the unemployed man was not revealed so as not to reveal the identity of his children, some of whom are minors between the ages of 5 and 11.

Inspector Matthew Grech testified that Police were informed of a burglary from a house and shop in San Ġann at around 10.00 a.m. Footage taken by CCTV cameras confirmed the police’s suspicions.

He said that the man entered the shop with his four young sons who were seen grabbing things from the shelves and putting them in their pockets.

He added that the Police intervened to apprehend the suspect while his sons, aged 5, 8, 9, and 11, were entrusted in the care of their mother.

The father, who said he lost his job due to the pandemic, was accused of stealing toys and electronic equipment. He was also accused of failing to properly care for his four minor children.

The court presided over by Magistrate Charmaine Galea placed the man on a three-year probation order and urged him to address his personal problems. The court was informed that his sons were being monitored by a number of social workers.

The man was assisted by Attorney Arthur Azzopardi.
